So you’ve made a brand new website for your business, but now you don’t seem to be getting enough traffic? Every time you search up your own website on google, you can’t even seem to find it?

Fret not, because in this article, I will be running through a list of ways that you can use to improve your website’s SEO.

So what is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is an important aspect of any website or online business. It helps to improve the visibility and ranking of a website on search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo. This can lead to increased traffic, better user experience, cost-effectiveness, brand awareness, and more conversions and sales.

Some strategies used by SEO professionals include optimizing your content, building high-quality backlinks, utilizing social media, and much more. So, if you’re looking to improve your website’s search engine performance, be sure to keep reading!

What types of businesses benefit from SEO?

SEO is an important part of any business’ marketing strategy. It allows you to reach more customers and increase your online visibility, which can lead to more sales and revenue. The benefits of SEO are especially apparent for businesses with a local presence–for example, restaurants or retailers who want to attract customers from their area.

However, it’s important to note that even if you’re not looking to target locals specifically with your marketing efforts, SEO can still be valuable. For example, if your company sells products that aren’t available locally (such as electronics), then it may benefit from having an optimized website in order to attract customers who live outside the region where they operate

Methods to improve your SEO

Free Tools from Google

The FIRST thing that you can do is to make sure that you are using all of Google’s free tools after you have finished building the core of your website. These tools include: Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Google My Business etc. These free tools help you track your website performance, traffic and many other metrics. There are tons of free videos and articles out there that can help you with setting these up and I will be giving you links to some of the best ones down below:

Improve your Page Loading Speed

So I bet you’ve heard this one before, but why is everyone always talking about page loading speed and why would it matter so much? Now let’s think about this way, let’s say you were Googlebot (Google’s generic web crawler name) and you had to look through and rank MILLIONS of web pages:

  • Page loading speed can have a significant impact a user experience. Imagine a page that take 10s to load every time you scroll your page! Annoying right?
  • Let’s say you search something and you click on the first link, and the page takes 10s to load, what would you do? CLICK AWAY and find the next best page! Slow page loading leads to an increased bounce rate, which is bad for SEO!
  • What if your website is not optimized for mobile usage? This is also a major red flag and it will definitely damage your local search engine ranking, as most people tend to use their mobile to check on businesses and services near them!

So how can we fix it?

  1. Make sure your website is responsive: What is a responsive design? It is basically a webpage that will adjust and fit the dimensions of the device it is being displayed on accordingly!
  2. Optimize your images and videos: Large images can slow down your website’s loading time. Compress these large files and remove the metadata to make them load faster. Personally, I like to use tinypng.com for images and veed.io for videos, but there are tons of other free tools that you can use as well!
  3. Use a Content Delivery Network (CDN): A CDN can help to speed up your website’s loading time by distributing your content across multiple servers. Don’t worry if you are just starting out! Cloudflare offers a free CDN plan that offers the basic benefits provided by a CDN.
  4. Optimize your website’s meta tags: Your website’s meta tags are HTML tags that provide information to the search engine regarding your webpage. To optimize them, you can download any popular SEO Plugins (eg: Yoast SEO, All-In-One SEO, Rank Math etc.) and use their guidelines to structure your website’s meta tags.
  5. Test your website on different devices: Always ensure to test your website on different devices (eg: Desktop, Tablet, Mobile) to ensure that it is properly optimized for mobile devices, before your website goes live!

Constantly Update and Maintain your Site

Google is smart, and it knows that users want content that is fresh and up-to-date. I mean, would an article about SEO from 2014 help you in current conditions? Probably not.

Because of this, Google has designed its algorithm in a way such that it rewards websites that provide the best user experience. By regularly updating your website, you are sending a signal to Google that your website is active and relevant. This can help to increase your search engine rankings and drive more traffic to your website. Remember, SEO is an ongoing process so you must regularly review and update your SEO strategy according to the latest updates from Google!

How can I tell if my efforts are successful?

Since you have now setup all the possible Google SEO tools, you can use Google Analytics to measure your website’s performance! You will be able to see how many visitors come to your site, where they came from and what they did while on it. After reviewing this information, you and your team will be able understand what content is working well and should be continually put out and which parts of the site still require improvement.

You should also check if all the pages of your website is indexed by looking at the Google Search Console. If all looks good here, then you’re probably in good shape. Don’t worry if you are new, Google will take time to crawl and index newer web pages as they see fit, but do remember to submit your sitemap whenever you have updates!
